As an avid lover of the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, the biggest question I had when I saw that a Luminous Silk Powder has been released was: But is it as good as the foundation?! Well, let’s find out…
So you know:
I have combination skin: dry and finely textured on the cheeks, with an oily t-zone. I’m also prone to minor breakouts. I tested this product on top of the Luminous Silk Foundation and the Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Concealer – a combination I’ve used and loved for over a year. I tested shade no. 3
HOW IT LOOKS ON THE SKIN
Despite the fact the Luminous Silk Powders are tinted, I didn’t find mine to provide any additional coverage to that given by my foundation and concealer. Instead, I found that it actually caused coverage to be lifted, and allowed for areas of pinkness to peep through my makeup. While this feature can be looked over for those who love light-coverage, light-weight, or barely-there makeup, for those who prefer to cover areas of pigmentation or breakouts this isn’t a particularly beneficial feature.
As a setting powder, I noticed that the fine texture on my skin was made more noticeable. Again, for people with smooth and clear skin, this could also be overlooked, but if you’re like me and wish to smooth and blur out the appearance of texture, this powder is probably not be the one for us. It’s not the most finely milled powder out there.
In terms of its luminosity, despite the product description suggesting it could be used as a highlighter, I couldn’t get it to perform in this way no matter the density of my brush. If you apply a lot of the powder across your cheeks with a smaller highlighter brush you can detect a natural luminosity. But while this technique doesn’t make your skin look dry, it’s time-consuming and requires a fair amount of product.
Overall, while Luminous Silk Powder looks OK on the skin, it’s unfortunately nothing special.

SIZE, PACKAGING + APPEARANCE
In the promotional images, no one can deny that the powder with its sand-like imprint looks stunning and a good size. But I was shocked at how much smaller the pan of powder was when I had it in my hands. The exterior tub, while pretty, is large in comparison, and because of that it strikes as unnecessarily big.
An ultra-soft small disc brush lives underneath the powder pan. Personally, I never use brushes like these, and it adds to the cost of an already expensive product. That being said, the powder pan is refillable so you don’t need to throw away the packaging if you wish to repurchase the product.
What’s more – the powder looks exceptionally texturised in the pan, which immediately makes you assume that it’s a dry and powdery formula. While the powder isn’t particularly fine, it isn’t powdery on the skin – nonetheless, it’s pressed appearance doesn’t look particularly enticing.
WHAT TO BUY INSTEAD
1. CHARLOTTE TILBURY AIRBRUSH FLAWLESS FINISH POWDER – FOUR SHADES
While this is a matte powder, it’s finely milled and comes in a pressed format. You only need the smallest amount, and it sets your makeup beautifully all day. Although when I first tried and reviewed this powder I didn’t recognise this next benefit, it’s incredible for people with acne, hyper-pigmentation or texturised skin. With it’s coverage-giving quality and blurring ability, it gives the skin an extra layer while providing a smooth finish. It’s truly an ‘Airbush’ look. As it is a matte powder, if you’re after a luminous look, don’t worry, just apply the lightest dusting across the skin. (Shop Now)
2. HOURGLASS VEIL TRANSLUCENT SETTING POWDER – ONE SHADE
If you’re after a luminous setting powder which ticks all the boxes, the loose Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder is an incredible option. As another finely milled powder, it gives the skin a healthy, hydrated look. It’s perfect for both the light- and full- coverage lovers, especially if you’re into radiant, glowy skin. While this is a particularly expensive powder, you are also given the option of purchasing a travel size so you can try it out before you buy the big one! (Shop Now)
3. JACLYN COSMETICS MOOD LIGHT LUMINOUS FACE POWDER – MULTIPLE SHADES
While this product is currently only available from the U.S., I believe Jaclyn Cosmetics will have a UK stockist sooner rather than later. This beautiful, versatile loose powder gives you two options, which can be used together if desired. On one hand, it’s a gorgeous luminous setting powder, but given just how finely milled the formula is, it can also be built up easily to provide a smooth highlight across the cheekbones. I use this powder all the time when I want my skin to look naturally glowy but want to use a powder product instead of a cream or liquid. Plus, it comes in multiple shades to compliment your skin tone. (Shop Now – US website)
