Wearing a red lip can take some guts. You immediately draw attention, and when this happens you want to make sure that you feel comfortable and at your best. For me, knowing I’m wearing a beautiful, flattering colour and a formula that I can rely on, gives me the boost of confidence I need to swipe a bold lipstick on and walk out the door. Admittedly, during lockdown I haven’t been wearing my reds, but they’ll be making their comeback as we adjust back to normal life – which is hopefully soon! Here are my six favourites…
MAC ‘SHOCKING REVELATION’ POWDER KISS LIPSTICK – £19
Any regular reader of my blog will know I have a love affair with this shade! As a part of MAC’s Powder Kiss range, Shocking Revelation is a stunning blue red which has a slight cherry undertone, making it vivid yet beautifully classy and chic. With a creamy feel, I’d describe this lipstick as a satin, and it has incredible lasting power on top of a lip liner – my favourite being Charlotte Tilbury’s Walk Of No Shame. Trust me when I say, Shocking Revelation is a major head turner. Reliable, gorgeous and comfortable – I love it.
HUDA BEAUTY ‘EL CINCO DE MAYO’ POWER Bullet Matte Lipstick – £22
If you’re after a similar shade to Shocking Revelation but you’d prefer a finish which is properly matte, then El Cinco de Mayo from Huda Beauty is a great option. I always apply the Power Bullet Matte Lipsticks on top of a balm – on bare lips they can tug, they can feel tight, and it’s harder to achieve full pigmentation. El Cinco de Mayo is a couple of shades warmer than Shocking Revelation.
PATRICK TA ‘THAT WHY SHE’S LATE’ MAJOR HEADLINES MATTE SUEDE LIPSTICK – £28
That’s Why She’s Late is a stunning rich blue red, which is deeper in tone than Shocking Revelation and El Cinco de Mayo. With a true matte finish, That’s Why She’s Late is a sensual red and is a great blue-based option to pair with cooler-toned eyeshadows and blushes. Like El Cinco de Mayo, I find that applying this shade on top of a balm is a necessity to keep it feeling comfortable on the lips.
CHARLOTTE TILBURY ‘WALK OF NO SHAME’ MATTE REVOLUTION LIPSTICK – £25
If you have a fair or light skin tone, you may be tentative when it comes to wearing red lipstick. Instead, you may prefer a shade which gives you that red look but in a more understated way. Walk Of No Shame by Charlotte Tilbury is my go-to for when I want to wear red but I’m not in the mood for RED.
When we desire a more subtle look, a shade like Walk Of No Shame can elevate our confidence while respecting our comfortability. As a rose berry with a brown undertone, it’s one of my favourite lipsticks from Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution range. It even has a matching lip liner, which is my favourite to use with all the red lipsticks I’m mentioning today.
NARS ‘STARWOMAN’ POWERMATTE LIP PIGMENT – £23
As a part of Powermatte Lip Pigment range, Starwoman has a watery consistency which is intensely pigmented. With a little going a long way, you only need the lightest touch of this jaw-dropping blood red. Although it’s not transfer proof, you can either wear Starwoman as a matte through applying a very thin layer across your lips, or with a shine through adding a bit more product. Given how little you need per application, this liquid lip will last you a long time.
NARS ‘TURBO’ AFTERGLOW LIP BALM – £23
I’m an huge lover of tinted lip balm. I appreciate the ease of application and the hydration they give in comparison to traditional lipsticks. So, of course, I have a red tinted lip balm in the form of Turbo by NARS. While it swatches more sheerly, on the lips the pigment can be intensified easily to give a stunning red look which has an incredible shine and a comfortable feel. Like Shocking Revelation by MAC, Turbo also has a cherry undertone, making it bright and perfect for all year round.
